Enhancing Leadership and Employee Experience in Our Industry

Updated: May 8, 2025

Understanding the Importance of Leadership Culture

Over the last month, I've seen many posts discussing industry events, leadership conferences, and planning meetings. These posts share common themes: cautious optimism about the business landscape in the second half of 2025 and into 2026, along with an emphasis on providing outstanding experiences for guests.

I share this optimism. To win in our industry, we must focus on creating great experiences. Our external guests deserve the very best. However, I argue that our internal guests—those responsible for delivering these experiences—also deserve the same level of care and attention. How leaders embrace their teams can define the success of our properties.

The Numbers Speak

Looking for proof? Consider these statistics and my recommendations:

Leadership Insights

  1. Employee Engagement: Employees who trust their leaders are 14 times more engaged. This translates into a higher willingness to offer exceptional experiences to our guests.

  2. Workplace Preferences: More than 58% of people state they wouldn’t work for a company with poor leadership culture. In my experience, two out of every three interviews I conduct reveal candidates upset with their leaders and their lack of care.

  3. Financial Impact: Poor leadership can result in a staggering $550 billion loss in productivity annually. Many properties may not recognize this invisible loss, which manifests through absenteeism and unfilled roles.

  4. Leadership Development: Organizations with active leadership development programs are 4.6 times more likely to cultivate high-quality leaders and maintain a strong talent pool. This query is frequently raised by candidates during interviews.

  5. Management vs. Interaction: Leaders who prioritize “managing” over “interacting” are 32% less engaged. They are also 1.5 times more likely to feel burned out by day's end and two times more likely to leave within a year. The real issue is not just turnover but burnout and disengagement among leaders who remain.

Letting Go of Ego: A Path Forward

To address these challenges, leaders must let go of their egos. Here are some actionable solutions:

Building Trust and Engagement

  1. Re-think Team Meetings: Leaders should communicate openly and honestly with their team members. Regular updates, clear expectations, and active listening can foster trust and security within the team.

  2. Recognition and Appreciation: Acknowledge and reward employees for their contributions regularly. This recognition can come through verbal praise, written notes, or formal recognition programs.

Improving Leadership Culture

  1. Invest in Leadership Training: Focus on comprehensive training that develops leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and effective management techniques.

  2. Establish Mentorship Programs: Pair experienced leaders with newer members of the team. This practice strengthens leadership culture and provides much-needed support.

Enhancing Productivity

  1. Address Burnout: Implement measures to prevent burnout. Encourage a healthy work-life balance, offer regular breaks, and provide resources for stress management.

  2. Streamline Workplace Processes: Review and optimize processes to reduce inefficiencies. Consider adopting new technologies or improving existing workflows to enhance productivity.

Fostering Meaningful Interactions

  1. Organize Team-Building Activities: Schedule regular events that encourage collaboration and strengthen relationships among team members.

  2. Create Feedback Mechanisms: Develop channels for employees to provide feedback and suggestions, allowing leaders to understand their team’s needs effectively.
