Riding in the car this morning, I found myself listening to a coach deliver one of the most raw, honest halftime speeches I’ve ever heard. Their team was up by more than 30 points. To be clear, I do not condone the language they used in a business setting; however, the message was crystal clear and undeniable.
The Importance of Standards in Business
It was about accepting standards—not operating procedures, but the acceptance of right and wrong. It was not about the scoreboard, not about the excuses, and not about the noise.
It hit me like a freight train.

In business, we chase metrics. We chase conversions, clicks, contracts, and commissions. But how often do we stop and ask: Are we living up to our standards? Or are we just reacting to the scoreboard?
This coach wasn’t talking about winning the game; that was a given. He was talking about winning the moment. About showing up with discipline, grit, and accountability—even when the scoreboard says you do not have to.
The Disruptive Truth
Here’s the disruptive truth: Most teams lose before they even get started because they tolerate low standards.
What This Means for Us
Whether you're running a hotel, managing a mobile team, or building client relationships, your standards are your culture. They’re the invisible contract between you and your team. They define what’s acceptable, what’s exceptional, and what’s non-negotiable.
If you don’t enforce them, you’re not leading. You’re just watching.
Your Move: Raise the Standard
I challenge you to do what that coach did.
✅ Forget the scoreboard.
✅ Revisit your standards.
✅ Have the hard conversation.
✅ Draw the line—and hold it.
Then share it. Post it. Talk about it. Let your team know exactly what you stand for—and what you won’t stand for anymore.
Because when you raise the standard, you raise the team.
The Path to Excellence
Raising standards is not just a one-time event; it's an ongoing journey. It requires commitment and consistency.
Building a Culture of Accountability
To create a culture of accountability, start by leading by example. Show your team what it means to uphold high standards. When they see you embody these values, they are more likely to follow suit.
Encouraging Open Communication
Encourage open communication within your team. Create an environment where everyone feels safe to express their thoughts and concerns. This openness fosters trust and helps maintain high standards.
Recognizing and Rewarding Excellence
Recognize and reward those who exemplify your standards. Celebrate achievements, no matter how small. This recognition reinforces the importance of maintaining high standards and motivates others to strive for excellence.
Conclusion
Raising your standards is essential for success. It transforms your team and enhances performance. Remember, it’s not just about the scoreboard; it’s about the journey, the discipline, and the commitment to excellence.
